Students for the Advancement of Science

We are an organization at Kent State University interested in increasing the curiosity and awareness of science.

Ask me anything

Hello all! I hope everyone’s summer is going fantastic! Just wanted to see if anyone has started or completed any of the new articles we discussed at the last meeting. We will try and have a meeting once school begins to finish talking about those. (If we can start working on them a little by the end of summer that would be fantastic).

Also, we have a booth at Back to School Blast-Off, which is August 28th. We are thinking of doing some pretty cool experiments at our table such as Elephant Toothpaste to draw in new members. We will also set up games with interesting science facts and even play Elements Twister! If anyone has any additional ideas please share them and let me know if anyone is able to help manage the booth.

Meeting Highlights

We have decided on our topics for our next articles. Some of our planned ideas include: Star Wars, Star Trek, Jurassic Park, and Xenon: Girl of the 21st Century. We will be discussing the scientific flaws that may be present in these movies in the articles. For the next meeting, April 5th, the rough drafts are due for the papers. We also discussed having an end of the year party, which would include yummy food!

Happy π Day!

Happy Pi day all! Just a reminder that our next meeting is tomorrow in room 312 in the Student Center. If you have new ideas for articles come prepared with a bulleted list summarizing your ideas. Everyone is welcome!

This Friday (March 11th) we are going bowling at Eastway!!!! Be there at 7:00 if you want to join in the fun! Invite your friends, too.

New Articles

During our meeting this past Tuesday we decided to write new articles on the scientific contradictions in cartoons and movies. Some of our ideas include: Jurassic Park, The Magic School Bus, and Star Trek. Our plan is to have bullet points for the article prepared for the next meeting (March 15th) and have the articles finished after spring break. This should be a fun assignment, and we will be posting our results around campus.

Update on NHM

We will now be going to the natural history museum on April 16th due to application deadlines. Please let us know if you would like to come!

Natural History Museum

We are currently filling out the papers to travel to the Natural History Museum on Saturday, March 12th. If you are interested in attending please let us know by contacting us here or facebook. We are trying to get the school to pay for our expenses so once we know who can go we can apply. It’s bound to be an adventure! (After all, they do have giant dinosaurs!!)

Next Meetings

Our next two meetings will be on March 1st and March 15th at 7:00 in room 312 in the student center. All are welcome!

Meeting Highlights

Natural History Museum trip

We are planning on going to the Natural History Museum on Saturday March 12th. We will be asking the school for funding for our trip. The cost of the museum with college ID is $8 and $12 if you want to see the planetarium, too. All are welcome. SAS members are encouraged to bring friends.

We are trying to raise funds for TJ’s solar panel project. Our ideas include setting up a demonstration of the solar panel in the student center to collect funds and picking up cigarettes around campus for extra money.

This Friday, February 18th, we will be bowling at 7:00 pm at Eastway.

We are working on assembling our newsletter with our articles. However, we are in need of more articles to complete this task. Our next bunch of articles is going to be on movies/tv shows and how they are scientifically correct/incorrect. Some ideas presented were Jurrasic Park and Star Trek.

Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be on March 1st where we will continue the discussion of new articles and elect/reelect officers.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Don’t forget our meeting is today at 7:00 pm in room 321!!! BE THERE!
